Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Position Overview 

The Brain Injury Society of Toronto (BIST) requires a collaborative, strategic and people-focused leader to replace the role of our current CEO. The CEO will lead a dedicated staff team to advance the vision and mission of the organization and ensure that programs, communication strategy and supports delivered by the organization are of the highest quality. 

Position Requirements 

Education and Experience 

+ An undergraduate degree in Business, Social Services or Public Administration or equivalent education and experience is strongly preferred. 

+ A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, ideally within the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), or Community Services sector. 

+ Strategic and operational planning skills required. 

+  Experience with fiscal responsibility and management of budgets is preferred. 

+ Understanding of non-profit governance and experience working effectively with a Board of Directors. 

+ Well-developed management skills. Comfortable building out new programs or ideas, effectively managing multiple priorities and able to meet deadlines. 

+ Proven success of building partnerships and alliances with a wide variety of stakeholders, including sponsors, service users and community agencies. 

+ Experience supporting and championing equity, diversity and inclusion work. 

+ Experience serving as a key spokesperson with partner agencies, government, community, and various stakeholders preferred. 

+ Experience writing grant proposals and reports an asset. 

+ Experience overseeing and coordinating fundraising events.

+ Possesses strength in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making to lead the senior leadership team and organizational priorities. 

Key Responsibilities 

Organizational Leadership 

+ In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop and execute a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization. Create and oversee all organizational policies and procedures. 

+ Communicate BIST’s strategic plan to the team and members and demonstrate how key priorities are in support of the Vision, Mission and Values. 

+ Execute and track achievement against operational/strategic plans and report results to the Board at bi-monthly meetings. 

People and Culture 

+ Provide strong team leadership which encourages employee motivation and engagement, ensuring excellence in service delivery and care for members of BIST. 

+ Build an environment that embraces transformation and change, promotes creativity and innovation to support the growth of the organization. 

+ Provide direct supervision to staffing team, volunteers, committee members and placement students. 

+ Provide leadership to advance BIST’s equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives aligned with strategic priorities. 

+ Foster a work environment that provides opportunity for increased responsibility, promotion, and continuous learning for employees. 

Operational Excellence 

+ Provide organizational leadership to BIST and effectively and efficiently manage the Agency’s services, human resources, financial resources, and relationships with partners, funders, and clients. 

+ Lead within policies and procedures that are approved by the Board of Directors and within the budget approved by the Board. 

+ Ensure that the programs and services of the Agency are accessible and delivered in an effective and efficient manner within approved budgets and policies. 

+ Seek opportunities for new funding initiatives including fundraising and grant writing. 

+ Prepare budgets for approval by the Board and control expenditures within budgets. 

+ Ensure legal, fiscal and regulatory compliance is properly monitored, maintained and reported for all aspects of BIST’s operations. 

Stakeholder Management 

+ Serve as the official spokesperson and an ambassador for BIST bringing awareness, advocacy and support for ABI. 

+ Develop and nurture strong working relationships and linkages with partner agencies within the ABI sector, funders and stakeholders within the community. 

+ Establish and nurture sector, community, provincial and other relationships and alliances that align with and support the ongoing development and future direction of BIST. 

+ Sit on and contribute to key external committees including Toronto Police Beyond Disabilities Consultative Committee, ABI Network Advisory Committee, Ontario Brain Injury Association Advisory Committee, Vulnerable Road Users Coalition. 

Fundraising 

+ Supervise volunteer committees to plan and host key fundraising events including annual golf tournament, Mix and Mingle and Heroes Run, Walk, Roll or Bike. 

+ Oversee communication and marketing strategy to recruit fundraiser participants and sponsors. 

+ Submit required permits, contracts and work with community stakeholders to ensure an organized and effective execution of events. 

Board of Directors 

+ Manage the Board of Directors, act as a direct liaison between the Board and BIST. 

+ Ensure regular and accurate operational and financial reporting necessary for the Board to properly function and make informed decisions. 

+ Develop in conjunction with the Board, BIST’s strategic plan. 

+ Monitor developments in service needs and delivery and recommend to the Board any new programs or revisions of programs necessary to meet BIST’s objectives and budget.
